Travel Guide: World Speed Shooting Championship 2026

Traveling to the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championship at CMP Talladega. Birmingham airport, lodging, weather, and logistics.

The World Speed Shooting Championship is the Super Bowl of Steel Challenge. Held at CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park, it's the highest-stakes event in a sport where matches are won and lost by hundredths of a second. The 2026 edition is also one of the more accessible destination matches for first-timers - Talladega is well-organized, the venue is modern, and the logistics are straightforward compared to the high-altitude Southwestern majors.

Getting there

Talladega is about 90 minutes east of Birmingham, Alabama, and 2 hours west of Atlanta.

  • Birmingham (BHM) - The closest major airport. About 1 hour 15 minutes from Talladega. Delta, Southwest, American, and United all serve BHM. Flight counts are moderate but enough for most travelers.
  • Atlanta (ATL)- Two hours east. The practical choice if you're coming from anywhere Delta serves well - which is almost everywhere. ATL is a Delta hub with nonstop service from essentially every US city. Often the cheapest flight option, and the extra hour of driving is worth it for the flight savings and schedule flexibility.
  • Huntsville (HSV) - About 2 hours north. Smaller airport, occasional good fare deals on Delta or United.

Rental car from either BHM or ATL. The drive is mostly interstate (I-20 east from BHM, I-20 west from ATL). Gas up before leaving the metro area - rural Alabama has gas stations but fewer rental-friendly ones.

Lodging

Talladega itself is a small town with limited hotel inventory. Most shooters stay in one of four places:

  • Talladega itself - Hampton Inn Talladega, Holiday Inn Express. Closest to the range (~15 minutes). Fill up during match week.
  • Oxford / Anniston - 25 minutes east on I-20. Much more hotel inventory, more restaurants. Home to the Oxford Exchange shopping area. Most out-of-town shooters end up here. Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Courtyard, Hyatt House are all easy options.
  • Pell City - 30 minutes west on I-20. Smaller than Oxford but has a Holiday Inn Express and some other chain options.
  • Sylacauga - 30 minutes south of the range through rural roads. Less convenient but has some options if everything else is full.

Oxford is the sweet spot for most people: good hotel selection, easy 25-minute interstate commute, and plenty of restaurants for dinner after the match. Book 3+ months out for match week because Oxford is also a regional commerce hub and fills up for conferences and events.

At the range

CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park is a modern, purpose-built competitive shooting facility. It's newer than most of the venues where Steel Challenge Worlds has been held historically, and the infrastructure shows:

  • Paved roads to every bay
  • Covered firing lines at many stages
  • Restrooms and water throughout the property
  • On-site CMP pro shop
  • Good cell service

Steel Challenge runs fast - individual stages take minutes per shooter, not the hours you'd spend on a USPSA or 3-Gun bay. Plan for a shorter day overall than you'd expect from a major match. Your squad will often be done with their assigned stages by mid-afternoon.

Weather and what to bring

Late May in eastern Alabama:

  • Highs in the upper 80s, occasionally pushing 90
  • Lows in the mid 60s
  • Humid. Like, truly Southern humid. The air feels heavier than it should for the temperature.
  • Thunderstorm risk. Usually afternoon pop-ups. Match directors will pause stages when lightning is within 10 miles and resume when it clears.

Pack:

  • Multiple breathable shirts - you'll sweat through them.
  • A dry change of clothes in your car for the ride back.
  • More ammunition than you need. Steel Challenge round counts are moderate (~195 rounds for the full match), but you want buffer for makeups and sighter rounds during squadding warmups.
  • A decent holster that handles fast draws cleanly.
  • A small towel and sunscreen. The Alabama sun is intense.

First-timer tips

  • The stages are the same ones you already practice.Steel Challenge uses the same eight courses of fire every match: Accelerator, Five to Go, Outer Limits, Pendulum, Roundabout, Showdown, Smoke & Hope, Speed Option. If you've shot monthly club matches, you know the layouts. Worlds rewards the shooter who has the cleanest draws and transitions, not the one who has memorized new stages.
  • Sight in your PCC the week before.PCC divisions dominate the front of the field in Steel Challenge and the zero matters at plate distances. Don't arrive with a just-assembled gun.
  • Book the on-site lunch if available. Talladega often has food trucks or a contracted lunch service. Better than driving 25 minutes to Oxford for food mid-day.
  • Bring a friend or fly solo and find a squad.Steel Challenge has a friendly, social culture - chatting with other shooters between strings is the norm.

If you're bringing family

Talladega is home to the Talladega Superspeedway NASCAR track - if NASCAR is your thing, there's a visitor center and museum. Otherwise, Atlanta is 2 hours east with plenty for a day trip: Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, the BeltLine. Birmingham has the Civil Rights Institute, which is outstanding. The Talladega National Forest has hiking and the scenic Talladega Scenic Drive (Highway 281) is beautiful.

Summary

Fly into Birmingham or Atlanta, rent a car, stay in Oxford, and enjoy one of the better-run destination matches on the calendar. Steel Challenge Worlds is a friendly, well-organized event at a modern facility with easy logistics. A great first destination match if you're looking to dip your toe into travel shooting.
