The 12 Biggest Competitive Shooting Matches of 2026
A season planner for serious shooters. These are the twelve 2026 matches that actually matter - the nationals, areas, and sponsored majors worth booking flights and vacation days for. Ranked by significance, stage quality, and the depth of field you'll be shooting against.
There are thousands of sanctioned shooting matches in the United States each year. Most are Level I club matches - great for practice, irrelevant for serious season planning. This guide focuses on the events at the top of the food chain: national championships, USPSA Area matches, and sponsored majors where the sport's best shooters show up. If you shoot four or five of these in a year, you're having a real season.
Every match below has a dedicated page on Major Match Finder with dates, venue, host club, and registration links. Click through for the details. The list is roughly ranked by overall significance, but disciplines are apples-to-oranges - a 3-Gun shooter and an IDPA shooter will have very different top-4s.
Vortex Optics Race Gun Nationals presented by Kimber
The blue-chip event of the USPSA season.
USPSA split its Nationals format for 2026. Race Gun Nationals is the big one - Open, PCC, Limited, Limited Optics, and Limited 10 all in one week. Cardinal Shooting Center in Ohio is a purpose-built range with flat infrastructure, so expect well-designed stages and enough bays to run large squads. The 468 main-match slots filled fast. If you're shooting any of the hardware-forward divisions, this is the match that defines your year, full stop.
2026 CMP Bianchi Cup International Pistol Tournament
The most prestigious pistol accuracy match on earth.
The Bianchi Cup has been the definitive accuracy-pistol event for 47 years, and 2026 is its second year under CMP management with MidwayUSA as title sponsor. Four classic courses - Practical, Barricade, Falling Plate, Moving Target - where the winner needs a score that borders on perfect. Production pistols, open guns, revolvers - everyone fits somewhere. If you've ever watched a Doug Koenig video and thought 'I want to do that,' this is where you find out how far off you are.
2026 Vortex Optics World Speed Shooting Championship
Fastest shooting on earth. Thousandths of a second decide everything.
Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting at Talladega is the fastest shooting sport in the world - eight standardized stages, each measured to the thousandth of a second. The stages are the same ones every SCSA match uses, so you can practice year-round knowing exactly what you'll face. The field is a mix of top USPSA shooters slumming it for a week and dedicated steel specialists with a decade of gas-pedal memory built up. Rimfire, centerfire pistol, PCC, and open divisions all run in parallel.
2026 Rocky Mountain 3-Gun Championship
The 3-Gun match shooters plan vacations around.
Rocky Mountain 3-Gun at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton has been the most reliably great 3-Gun match in the country for years. Whittington is 33,000 acres of high-desert terrain, which means stages actually use elevation, distance, and natural barriers instead of the flat-range-with-fault-lines setup most 3-Gun matches devolve into. Expect rifle engagements past 400 yards, shotgun slug challenges that punish sloppy transitions, and heat that'll make you question your life choices by the end of day two.
2026 USPSA Multigun Nationals
USPSA's flagship multigun event, back in the Midwest.
USPSA Multigun Nationals at Forest Lake is a different feel from Rocky Mountain. Where RM3G is endurance and environment, USPSA Multigun is pure technical stage design - 250 rounds each of pistol, rifle, and shotgun, plus 10 slugs, across stages built by match directors who write the rulebook. If you want to test your stage breakdown and transition work against the national field on fair ground, this is the match. Match director Adam Maxwell has been building these stages for years.
2026 IDPA National Championship Presented by JP Enterprises
The top defensive-pistol match of the year.
IDPA Nationals is where the defensive-pistol crowd meets the competition crowd, and it's always a better match than people expect. JP Enterprises as the 2026 title sponsor is notable - they make some of the best parts in the industry and they don't put their name on mediocre events. Stages emphasize concealed-carry gear and realistic scenarios, which means cover use, reloads on the move, and engagement sequences that feel tactical without being silly. Stock Service Pistol, Carry Optics, and Enhanced Service Pistol draw the biggest fields.
SIG Sauer Factory Gun Nationals presented by Berry's Bullets
The production-gun side of USPSA Nationals.
This is the other half of USPSA Nationals - Carry Optics, Single Stack, Revolver, and Production. Hurricane, Utah is a long drive from basically everywhere, which is either a feature or a bug depending on whether you like destination matches. Southern Utah Practical Shooters built a proper facility out there, and the desert scenery alone is worth the trip. Carry Optics is the fastest-growing USPSA division right now, so expect the deepest field to be there.
2026 Cheely Custom Gunworks USPSA Area 5 Championship
The best-run Area match in the USPSA system.
USPSA Area Championships are the tier-right-below-Nationals events, one per region each year. Area 5 has a reputation for being the most reliably well-run of the eight. Match Directors Chris Vasilion and Alex 'Manny' Mansfield have built Oak Hill into one of the go-to USPSA venues in the Midwest. Cheely Custom Gunworks as title sponsor means you're also likely to bump into Phil Strader and a handful of other GM-level shooters using it as Nationals prep. If you can only shoot one Area match, make it this one.
2026 CMP National Matches at Camp Perry
A month of matches at the most storied range in American shooting.
Camp Perry is the Wimbledon of American shooting. The CMP National Matches run for nearly a month and include National Trophy Pistol, Service Rifle, Long Range, Smallbore, and Air Gun championships. Most USPSA shooters have never set foot on Camp Perry, which is a shame - even the infrastructure alone (600-yard reduced targets, covered pits, generations of history) is worth a pilgrimage. If traditional marksmanship is in your future, start here. The Springfield Trophy match is the single most prestigious rifle event in the country.
2026 NRL22 National Championship Presented by Tikka
Precision rifle on a budget, with a real national championship.
NRL22 is the gateway drug for precision rifle. .22 LR, relatively affordable rifles, and a standardized course of fire that runs at clubs nationwide each month. The National Championship is two days at Carbon Hill, Alabama, and the field is a mix of kids, retirees, and people on their way to PRS centerfire. Tikka is the 2026 title sponsor, which reflects how seriously the precision rifle industry is taking this format. Bring a rifle that'll group under 3/4 MOA and positional practice, and you can genuinely compete.
The GOAT 2 - PCSL 2-Gun sponsored by BELT
The best PCSL match of 2026 for 2-Gun shooters.
PCSL is the newer practical shooting league focused on 2-Gun (rifle + pistol) and 3-Gun formats with modern gear. The GOAT 2 at Element Training Complex is one of the biggest PCSL sponsored events of 2026, running ~200 rifle and 200 pistol rounds across a long weekend. Element is a purpose-built training facility, so the stage infrastructure is tight. If you shoot gas-gun divisions and feel USPSA is too restrictive or 3-Gun is too much logistics, PCSL is worth trying. The GOAT 2 is your entry point.
IWI 2026 Desert Classic - USPSA Area 2 Championship
November USPSA in the Arizona desert. Your year-end event.
The Rio Salado Desert Classic is the USPSA Area 2 Championship, held annually at Rio Salado Sportsman's Club in Mesa. November in Arizona is ideal shooting weather - 70s and sunny while the rest of the country is dealing with snow. Rio Salado is one of the largest public shooting facilities in the western US and runs USPSA weekly, so their stage-building chops are dialed in. IWI as title sponsor for 2026. This is the last big USPSA match of the calendar year and a good one to cap the season.
How we picked these
There are more than 50 Level II+ matches on Major Match Finder for 2026. To pick these twelve, we looked at three things: the history and reputation of each event, the quality of the host venue and stage-building crew, and the likely depth of the competitive field. A Level II at a well-run club with a great match director often beats a poorly-organized National on every one of those metrics.
We deliberately spread the list across disciplines instead of top-loading it with USPSA and Steel Challenge. A list of “the 12 best matches” that's 10 USPSA events would be accurate but useless as a planning tool.
Dates, locations, and registration details are pulled from our database and are current as of April 2026. Always verify with the host club before booking travel - match schedules change.
